PET bottles are plastic bottles made from Polyethene Terephthalate, a strong, lightweight, and recyclable plastic commonly used for packaging drinks like water, soda, and juice. Vepa takes these bottles from Amsterdam’s canals to transform them into PET felt, all while cleaning up Amsterdam’s waterways, reducing plastic pollution, and turning waste into stylish, sustainable office furniture.
How is a chair made from PET bottles?
Bottles are separated into colours, cleaned and shredded. Flakes are are processed to granulate and fibres. The granulate is used to make foam plates and fibres are made into PET felt mats. PET felt is supplied to the processor on large rolls. After the felt has been cut into the required size by the cutting machine, the felt is heated and pressed into the desired shape. No additional glue or other additives are used. A water jet cuts out the contour and the hole pattern. After which the component is ready for use.
The cool thing about this material is that the pressed PET felt can be re-used after usage. No waste.
What is Plastic Whale?
Plastic Whale is a social enterprise based in the Netherlands with a mission to create a plastic-free world. They fish plastic waste from canals, such as PET bottles and turn it into valuable products like furniture and even boats. When you buy from Vepa’s Felt collection, 3% of your purchase supports Plastic Whale’s ongoing work, including education programmes and clean-up efforts in areas affected by plastic pollution, such as parts of Africa.
What does BS 5852 mean?
BS 5852 is a British Standard highlighting fire resistance requirements for upholstered furniture fillings, such as foam. It sets out tests to assess how well these materials withstand ignition and how quickly flames spread. The standard ensures that the filling will not easily catch fire or burn quickly in the event of a fire.
