Get ready to revise with our top tips!

Studying for exams is often considered to be stressful, but with careful planning and revision, there’s no need for it to be so difficult. Plenty of preparation and careful time management can give you a great head start, but it’s also important to consider your environment.

Creating a perfect revision space at home requires an assessment of your study style and a compromise with other members of the family or household, so here are some ideas for creating a home study space that will provide you with everything you need.

How to create the perfect home study space

The perfect study space will vary greatly depending on a number of factors. Ask yourself some questions in advance and decide what works best for you. For instance, do you share your home with other people? That might help you to make a decision on where to situate yourself.

If you share your home, the living room might not be the best bet – the TV will be distracting to you, and other family members might not appreciate you sitting there intensely studying while they try to relax. In this case, the bedroom might be the best bet. Of course, if you have a spare room, this would be ideal, but don’t worry if space is at a premium.

Once you’ve chosen a space, make it your own. Negotiate with members of the household on when you would like to use that space, and set clear rules that mean you are not disturbed.

Think about environmental factors – do you need a lockable door to prevent kids from running in? What is the temperate like and can it be adjusted? Do you need/prefer natural light?

Being comfortable will make study easier

Set up your desk and chair perfectly for study. Consider ergonomics and make sure that the desk is the right height and that when you sit on the chair, your legs bend at 90° with your feet flat on the floor and your arms bend at 90° at the elbow so that your hands rest just above your keyboard. This will prevent pain from sitting for extended periods.

Ensure that the desktop is clear, with everything laid out the right way, and give yourself plenty of room for both your computer and keyboard and any revision books/notepads you might need.

Opt for some extra storage too – not only will this help you to stay organised and keep all of your study materials safe, but carefully considered storage will mean that when you are finished for the day you can clear everything away so that the space is neat and tidy and doesn’t affect those your share your home with.

Being considerate will significantly reduce stress and the goodwill will mean family members will work extra hard to ensure you aren’t distracted when you need to focus.
