Premiershield cupboards

Get organised and make your home office work better for you.

If you work from home, it’s crucial that you make the most of your space. Usually space is at a premium and often has to do double duty as both an office and a living or sleeping area. That can make it even harder than usual to keep everything organised.

Luckily, some careful planning and regular maintenance can ensure that your home office doesn’t end up disorganised and works for you instead of against you. Follow these top 5 home office hacks and get your space organised.

5 top home office hacks

1 – Maintain cleanliness

Staying on top of your office cleanliness is even more important when you work from home. Make your space work for you by completely banishing your junk drawer (we know you have one!). Clear it out, throwing away everything you don’t need, and resist the temptation to let it accumulate junk over time by fitting an organiser in it.

2 – Think ergonomics

Ergonomics is the study of how we fit into our environment and has become a crucial area for ensuring that sedentary office workers use their space wisely for optimum health. Spending long periods of time at the desk can be harmful but this can be mitigated with regular breaks.

However, you also need to ensure you are using your desk and chair properly. That means adjusting everything to suit your own needs. Make sure that when you sit at your desk your back is straight (but not too straight) and that your knees are bent at 90° with your feet firmly on the floor.

Your elbows should also be bent at 90° with your desk at the right height so that your hands rest just above the keyboard. You monitor should be at eye height, and you should also position everything on the desk so that you aren’t craning your neck or over-reaching for items.

3 – Tidy your cables

If space is at a premium, you don’t want to be tripping over cables or taking up extra space by having wires everywhere.

Unplug everything, straighten wires to remove any kinks and use an under the desk cable tray or colour-coded cable ties to make sure that your wires are collected together neatly and you can easily see where everything leads.

4 – File everything

It’s time to get your paperwork sorted with an efficient filing system. Consider using a filing cabinet or desk drawer with hanging files or at the very least, dedicate a storage area only for paperwork. Use a simple, straightforward system that allows you to find things easily.

Make a table of contents for your files so you can see them at a glance, don’t overfill filing cabinets and choose a practical naming system. Break out a label maker – it’ll be your best friend when you’re trying to keep things organised.

5 – Get your storage in order

It’s not just paperwork that needs to be stored. Stationery, equipment, printer paper and other consumables – you need appropriate places for all of this. Store away the stuff you don’t use every day in a separate storage unit and keep your desk drawers for the things you use daily – but keep them off your desk.
