The spandrel is the odd shaped, (normally triangular) panel infill below the outer face of a staircase.  This panelling under the sloping sections of a stair can provide storage space  or even without panel cover, provides spaces under stairs for a showcase feature area, or can even offer a mini workspace.

Alternatively, in architecture, it can denote an almost triangular space between one side of the outer curve of an arch, a wall and the framework above, or the space between the shoulders of adjoining arches and the top capping.
