Sapwood

August 14th, 2017

The sapwood is the outer area of a tree trunk or sawn log.    Sapwood is generally lighter in colour than the inner heartwood, although not all tree species show clear differences. The sapwood is more vulnerable to attack by biological organisms, which may show as ‘faults’.   Sapwood is also usually more permeable than the heartwood, making it easier to treat with preservatives.
