Heartwood

September 10th, 2017

The heartwood is the inner area of a tree trunk or log.  The heartwood is often more durable than sapwood, so is commonly preferred for wood furniture production.

During tree growth, this core of the trund stops containing living cells and reserve materials, such as starch. It becomes darker in colour than the outer sapwood, which remains as the living part of the tree, transporting nutrients.  Not all species of tree show a clear difference between the two, so hardwood furniture containing heartwood and sapwood may show no difference.
