Dovetail

October 14th, 2017

Dovetailing is a carpentry and joinery method of joining two pieces of wood or other material at right angles to each other.  An interlocking flaring triangular shape is cut into the two adjoining pieces.  Each fits perfectly into a corresponding opposite shape for a robust and lasting fit.

The splayed shape of each cut on one of the adjoining components is shaped like a dove’s tail, which is what gives this kind of joint its name.   The splayed interlocking edge fits into the ‘socket’ of the second component.
