Dado

The dado is the lower part of an interior wall, from approximately below waist height, which may be decorated differently from the upper part.  The division is usually differentiated by a moulded ‘dado rail’, often made of wood.

This interior room design feature is often used in Victorian and Edwardian  properties, albeit not strictly confined to older properties.
