If you have decided to work from home, your next step is deciding where your office will be. If you have a spare room, then the answer is simple, but if you don’t, you really need to plan. Your home office should remain separated from all the other activity in your home. Your home office needs a permanent place and ideally have its own entrance.
If you have a big house, chances are that you have a study. This is suitable for your home office. A nominated study room are most ideally suited for home offices as they are structured to give sufficient light and are big enough to accommodate office furniture like an office desk, office chair, filing cabinets and other storage. Just because you already have a study, does not necessarily mean that you will be able to function productively in your home office. If your study is badly designed, it is going to hamper your work.
Spare bedroom
If your home is not large enough for a study, then you need to find another option for your home office space. If you have a spare bedroom, convert it into your home office. Make sure the bedroom you intend to convert into your home office is quiet and is in a low traffic area away from family members. Make sure it is away from the kitchen or living area.
Cellar
Another option for a home office could be the cellar. It is private enough for business although if you do not have enough natural light, it may not be the best idea. Although installing natural lighting via certain bulbs may help. You will likely to have all the space you need for your computer desk and filing cabinet and with a cellar you could probably choose a larger style office desk to suit all your working needs.
Garage
Another option may be to use the garage as your home office. Make it your last option, if it creates a hindrance to your regular parking space, although there is plenty of room to spread your office furniture out in a garage. A garage would also be suitable as it has a separate entrance to the house and offers the privacy you need to work efficiently.
The perfect place
The perfect place to have your home office is a place that offers enough privacy, peace and enough space for a large office desk. Your office desk needs to be big enough to allow you to spread out your work, without being untidy.
