The Victorians really knew what elaborate meant when it came to design and furniture and this worked its way into the office place too, where office furniture items were large lavish items made of heavy expensive oak.
The designs on office furniture pieces in Victorian times were intricate and time consuming to produce, so even office furniture items were pieces of artwork in themselves.
The Victorians really prided themselves on their furnishings and decoration and this was the period where, if you had the money, you would spend it on the very best, intricately designed, heavy hard wood office desk.
Ergonomics is quite a new thing and because the office chairs in which the Victorians would sit were rarely sat in for 8 hours a day (there were no computers then!), it did not matter as much as it does these days to have an adjustable back and arm rests on an office chair.
It was common place to see richly ornate rugs adorning the office floor and even rich heavy velvet tasselled curtains on the windows behind large book cases.
A grandfather clock was not an unusual sight either and many offices had this as their centre piece and was a commonplace office furniture item.
