The joy of a home office

I know that it is a dream of mine not to have to take part in a five day morning and evening commute, traffic and nosey bosses and those petty office politics!

When you think about the money and time you spend travelling and the tax write offs you can claim if you did work from home e.g. claiming back office expenses such as purchasing office furniture, phone bills and your car if you use it for business.

There are many positives for working from home as far as I can see!

If you are lucky enough to be in a position where you are able to work from home, approach it in the right way and consider all the logistics first.

Once you have chatted to everyone in the house about your plans, (remember, you could be affecting other people’s space), if you have a spare room or a storage room or basement (we all have a storage place).  Is this storage space big enough to be a home office? Can you clear it out?  Will it fit all your necessary office furniture?  Is there enough light?  Could you create your own lighting? Would you be happy working in that room and calling it your office?

We can’t all pick and choose but ideally the bigger the space the better, a large office desk will keep you organised and a spacious office will keep you uncluttered.

If there is a spare room in the house, check with all concerned but consider this a good option.  A spare room is ideal – you need your own office where you can shut the door and concentrate on your work in peace at your office desk.

Also, don’t forget to check with your insurance and mortgage companies, there are not normally too many clauses that state that working from home could affect your policy, however, it is not uncommon that there may be necessary clauses that may need amending.

Some people I know who have a home office feel the need to dress up for work even if they are only working from the house, in order to motivate them and get them into a work frame of mind. Sitting in front in their office chair in their pyjamas doesn’t suit everyone, although if it suited you it saves a fortune on work clothes!
