Most people have a manager, but attending to their demands and weird idiosyncrasies can be nerve-wracking. Wise people will engage good boss management strategies. After all, our bosses are not invincible gods. They are just human beings with authority along with the usual levels of human weaknesses and problems and pressures.
Assess Leadership Style – understanding the leadership skills that are inherent in your own boss will assists you to better understand your boss.
Leader 1: The Press Leader
These leaders are like drill sergeants and expect you to work within a tight time frame. Ensure you are at your office desk no later than your start time. They tend to have low self-esteem and a strong fear of failure which drives them. This leader treats people as expeditors who must obey orders and they tolerate no mistakes. Trivial details will snare their energy and attention. They tend to over supervise and manage by punishment. They can be so difficult as to expect people to be sat in their office chairs at all times working. They will not tolerate a person being a minute late back to their office desk after a break time.
How to handle The Press Leader: Quickly determine if your boss is simply tough or just downright ruthless. The tough leader precisely delegates their authority balanced with the appropriate responsibility. The ruthless boss disregards human factors. If you do choose to resist the press leader, do it privately and not within view of colleagues. If your boss expects you back at your office desk at a certain time – be there.
Leader 2: The Laissez-Faire Leader
This leader completely abandons staff. These leaders will provide its department with little or no support in tough times. They tend to tell you little of what is expected of an employee. Providing virtually no project management guidance, the Laissez-Faire Leader may hover over an employee’s office desk but does nothing to train or guide.
Managing The Laissez-Faire Leader: An individual who is self-motivated and needs little praise will work well under this leader. This leader will crave facts such as statistics and research findings. Encourage your boss to clarify exactly what it is that needs to be accomplished.
