There are various methods you can put into place to ensure you are using a good business management system for your home office.
Organising Data and Supplies
The home office should have a securely locking filing cabinet to keep your business documents. Always keep important data in the same filing cabinet. All business receipts and other business forms need to be kept safely and where you are not going to lose them i.e. all together in the same office desk drawer. It’s just as important to keep documents and other business related items put away so that a member of the family doesn’t spell something on them. Losing some important paperwork could be very costly for a home based business.
Computer
Always keep data on your computer password protected. If you do not password protect your business documents it could be possible that children can go in and accidentally delete all of your home based business data. If you have a laptop it is even more important to do this because if you did not leave it on your office desk and it is on the living room table then who knows what could happen.
Financial Management System
Another big mistake is that some new home business owners do not keep a separate financial management system for their business and home money. Your business should always have its own bank account and you should have a set pay day. Do not give yourself advances, even if you feel you may have earned them. It’s so important to keep a firm track of business expenditures. Should your financial records mingle in with your weekly shopping it’s going to get very difficult to keep track of funds.
