The office desk is not given too much thought as an item, however, have you ever wondered how it was developed and where the idea came from?
Office desks have come a very long way from their notable evolution with numerous designs and materials over the decades. During their beginning in the 17th century, the office desk was only created for the sole use of creating documents. All that was required from the first office desks was enough space for placing and writing documents and keeping ink bottles and writing tools.
Office desks were crafted as pieces of art and each desk was hand-made and uniquely produced by a master craftsman.
As the 18th century rolled in office desks grew in their popularity and started to be produced as more than simple pieces of wood for writing documents. Craftsmen were beginning to see that there was a market for office furniture that was merging and customers now had a range of varying requirements that they needed from this office furniture item. Customers needed larger surface space from their desks to draw up manufacturing and building projects. The first creation of a drafting table was born.
The desire for office furniture items to maximize the space they used increased which meant that desk makers could begin coupling storage capacity with a larger office desk top.
During the 19th century office desks started to resemble more of the type of office furniture we use today, however, office desks were made of more cumbersome and heavier materials.
