If you plan to refurbish your office in the near future then try to remember that the correct lighting is just as important as having the right kind of desks and chairs. Just as people’s health suffers from sitting at a desk that is the wrong height, or using a chair that has insufficient support, so it also suffers from a lack of light.
In recent years there has been a lot of discussion around symptoms labelled as seasonal affective disorder. Research on the condition commonly known as SAD, has shown that a lack of sunlight can seriously affect certain people. Such information tends to suggest that clear and sufficient lighting is a necessary part of making people feel good, and could have the same effect on productivity as inadequate office furniture.
Nobody likes to work in the dark and computer screens are much easier to read when you have a good light source. It is all too easy to forget about lighting fixtures when you start looking for new office furniture. Many offices retain the same type of lighting year after year and although there was a fashion for having fluorescent tubes everywhere, it does not suit everyone.
A light and airy office is just as important as one that is filled with all the latest ergonomic furniture. If the lighting isn’t right then employees end up squinting at their computer screen or at the documents that they are trying to file. When people work in a place with insufficient lighting they are more tired and irritable at the end of a day than those who work with a good light source.
