The first few weeks of a new employee’s time at a company is rather like a ‘honeymoon’ period. During their initial trial period both parties are working out whether each will suit the another.
When things do go wrong why does this happen?
The wrong person during recruitment?
If the company was desperate to find someone to fill a critical position urgently it can sometimes mean that the wrong person is grabbed, which is usually one of the first people to sit in the office chair for the interview.
No or completely incorrect induction?
This is true of larger firms that don’t adopt this policy because the larger the firm the more confusing it is for the new person. It is often likely that new people need an explanation of how departments communicate with each other and what procedures are important within their role.
If the reporting lines are unclear then not only will the new employee not feel supported but they will also fail to perform their new role well.
Ensure the new person is given all the correct office furniture and office equipment to ensure they have everything they need to do a good job.
A new employee needs constant feedback so they understand and learn quickly, if you have not fed back to them correctly then they won’t know they have to feedback to you.
